So, the Thrillerbatch video seems to be making the rounds again. For those who were lucky enough to miss all the drama the first time around, here’s a breakdown:

What it is: Benedict Cumberbatch dancing to the song “Thriller” with some friends at a private party.

How it got onto Tumblr: It was stolen from Olivia Poulet’s Facebook account.

Why people don’t like to see it on their dash: It was a private video, never meant to be shown to anyone but close family and friends, and is a huge invasion of Benedict and Olivia’s privacy.

I don’t feel like it’s our job as fans to tell other fans what to do. But I do think it’s reasonable to ask folks to think twice before posting any links, embeds, gifs, or still images from a video that’s basically the internet equivalent of peeking into someone’s bedroom window.

Reblogging any part of the video makes us all, as fans, look kind of creepy. And seeing it on our dashes makes a lot of us feel creepy, too…because by looking at it, we’re unwittingly participating in invading Benedict and Olivia’s privacy.

So, yeah…thanks for reading, and I hope this helps explain why lots of us really don’t want to see this on our dashes again.

Side note: does anyone have any solid links re: the hacking? After some pretty intense Google-fu I could only find one: a tweet from Montserrat Lombard saying that Olivia’s account had been hacked. I’m hearing reports that Olivia asked people not to share the video, too, though - anyone have a link to that? (I’m not saying it didn’t happen, mind; just that the lack of any links to back up peoples’ claims that the video was stolen might be one of the reasons why it’s making the rounds again.)

As usual, the people I follow are lovely classy folks and I haven’t seen much of the video lately, but it never hurts to spread this around again.

As for Olivia asking herself - she’d posted about it on her Twitter account when she temporarily reclaimed control of it, but closed it completely not long afterwards, so the message is gone now. But I did see it, and she did ask clearly and politely to please remove all instances of it.
